February Events to Show You Our Love!

Funny dog with bright beautiful red heart on head

February may be the month of love birds and presidents, but at Cypress Waters, we’re here to celebrate YOU! It’s resident appreciation month, and we can’t help but cheese out on the resident appreciation sayings:

Residents like you are the HEART of our community.

Love is like a KEY – it can unlock endless possibilities.

Roses are red, candy is sweet; you make living here such a treat!

Too much? We’ll try to tone it down…maybe a bit.  As we work on our resident poetry, here are lots of events you can look forward to this month:

Saturday February 6th: National Frozen Yogurt Day

Let us count the ways how we     you… what about partnering with TCBY to get you a 10% discount for yogurt?! You read that right! Just mention us and they’ll hook you up with a special. Make sure to go to Elenors Square, 230 N Denton Tap Rd. #109, Coppell, TX 75019.

Sunday, February 7th: Super Bowl Sunday

We all look forward to this day when we get to watch football, funny commercials and what about the half time show?! We hear Beyonce and Cold Play are planning on bringing down the house! Don’t watch it alone… join us at the Glass Box for some hotdogs, snacks and drinks.

Monday, February 8th: Kite Flying Day

Kite flying…. enjoyed by the young and young at heart. There’s something about a kite soaring high in the sky and dancing in the wind that won’t help but make you smile! Stop by the office this day and pick one up to enjoy.

Monday, February 15th: Single Awareness Day Happy Hour

Let’s celebrate not having to celebrate Valentine’s Day! But really it’s just another excuse to celebrate our awesome residents with some delicious drinks. Don’t be like grumpy cat and join us for a happy hour on us! You don’t have to be single to attend.

Saturday, February 20th: Resident Appreciation Brunch

Not to get too gushy, but we really do LOVE our residents (did you read up above?!?)  We want to show you just how much we appreciate you with brunch at the Glass Box.  Sleep in, stop by and grab some good eats and a big THANK YOU from our team.  Because let’s face it.  We       You. And Brunch.

Friday, February 26th: Fairy Tale Day & S’mores

Bring the kiddos over for some story time and s’mores. It’s like camping, but without the bon fire and more awesome. Guaranteed great time for the little ones!

4 Ideas to Brighten Your Holiday Spirits

DSC_0204.JPG

It’s not too late to still get your holiday fix! If you’ve been hustling and bustling but have forgotten to enjoy the season, here are 4 local hot spots that will be sure to delight and amuse even the scrooge-iest of your out-of-town relatives:

  1. Historic Downtown Grapevine, AKA the Christmas Capital of Texas® Ongoing through January 3rd. If you like lights, you’ve come to the right place. Literally millions of lights are used up and down Main Street, in the town square and to create the LED tunnel that ripples and twinkles with countless colors and patterns. Take your own Instagram-worthy shots on the giant ornaments, with the live brass band playing Christmas carols, or even in the extra-large kissing booth, complete with hanging mistletoe ball. Just remember that Main Street gets packed, so bring your patience if you plan to eat at any of the local restaurants.
  2. Gaylord Texan Resort – ICE! and Lone Star Christmas Check them out through January 2nd. Whether you’re craving hot cocoa or wanting to build a gingerbread house with the family, the Gaylord Texan has Christmas fun oozing from every square inch of their resort. And even if our forecast doesn’t call for a white Christmas, you can still tube down the giant indoor snow hill or don parkas and check out ICE! – a marvel of over 2 million pounds of ice, carved into life-sized scenes celebrating Christmas around the world!
  3. Bass Pro Shop – Santa’s Wonderland Hurry – Santa is only there until 5pm on Christmas Eve!  So you may associate Bass Pro Shop with your Uncle Andy’s singing fish. But this hunting and fishing mega store goes all out when it comes to Santa. Lines are formed every 30-minutes, but you can go and grab a ticket with your specified line time so you can take the little ones to enjoy a ride on the carousel, write a letter to Santa or create other fun crafts and activities. And the best part – it’s all FREE! Once you get to Santa, you can take photos with your own camera, plus the friendly elf photographers will give you a photo with Santa, also FREE!
  4. Your Very Own Christmas Light Tour- When all else fails, you can always hop in your car and take your family to see some of the most impressive holiday light displays in the Metroplex! Don’t forget to pack your thermos of hot cocoa and a queue up a few Christmas tunes to sing along. Here’s a great compilation of light displays and their locations: http://familyeguide.com/christmas-light-displays-dfw/

Meet your CARES Team at the Pool Party this weekend!

At The Neighborhoods of Cypress Waters, we are beyond excited to have a CARES team in place to help make our residents feel welcome and to plan and build up our community events. If this is your first apartment living experience with a CARES team, here is what you can expect:

CARES
/kers/

1. Verb. To look after and provide for the needs of.
2. Noun. A team that redefines the resident experience through relationship building, event planning and servicing the needs of the community. See below image for what a CARES team should look like.

Meet Naly and Josh!

Meet Naly and Josh!

What’s your names? Where are you from?

My name is Naly Dunham and I was born and raised in Germany. My parents are Lao and Vietnamese.

My name is Joshua Dunham and I was born and raised in Thailand. My parents are from Texas and Louisiana

When you’re not planning resident events, what do you do in your spare time?

Our time is split between movies, friends, church, lakes, but enjoy just being at home as well

Do you have any interesting hobbies/talents?  Places you’ve lived?  Adventures?

Joshua ran an orphanage and completed his South-East Asian studies at the university in Thailand. He loves to travel, has been to most of the Asian countries and lived in Ireland and Romania.

Naly loves to travel too and speaks 5 languages. She has worked outside of Germany/U.S. in England, Belgium and Thailand as well. In England she has coordinated various city trips for different groups in England, Wales, Belgium, France.

Our latest adventure was having vacation in Myanmar which boarders India. It was very special to us … and we just came back two weeks ago.

What do you hope to bring to the Cypress Waters community?

We’ve never been a CARES team before, but we hope to build upon the strong sense of community which already exists at Cypress Waters and try to make it even better. We hope to add a sense of culture and celebration, but above all we want to serve and help build a sense of fun, safety, acceptance, family and community.

If you could do one nice thing for someone, what would it be?

Always, always cook dinner for them. There is nothing better than cooking dinner, putting on some good music and having great conversations. Feel free to take us up on that!

Where can residents meet & get to know their CARES team?

Of course you will find us at every event – including the Pool Party this weekend! – but besides that we have an open door policy. You are always welcome to come by our apartment in Sycamore Park (stop by the leasing center for our unit #) or feel free to email us anytime at neighborhoodscypresswaters@caresprogram.org.  We look forward to meeting you all soon!

Tips for throwing the perfect summer BBQ

Hamburgers cooking on barbeque grill with flames

Host your own smokin’ barbeque this summer!

Temps are well into the 90s and 100s, and even though you love being outdoors, you may want a grill near a pool or AC to make the best of your summer barbeque.  Here at Cypress Waters, the Glass Box Community Lodge at the Scotch Creek pool offers a terrific setting for your next cookout. Available for all residents to reserve for private parties, the Glass Box boasts a killer multi-functional indoor entertainment space, including flat-screens, games and a full-service kitchen – AND AIR CONDITIONING – as well as an outdoor kitchen and grill just waiting to be fired up.

But, before you pull out your collection of secret sauces and mouthwatering rubs, heed these tips for throwing the perfect summer barbecue.

Instead of just tossing meat on the grill, handing everyone a paper plate and yelling, “Come and get it!”, think of a fun theme for your party. It doesn’t have to be Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day or any special occasion. You can tailor your barbecue to a specific type of food or a personal milestone. Themes to consider include beach, all-American, Tex-Mex, Hawaiian or summer sports.

As long as you have your theme thinking cap on, consider simple, yet eye-catching decorations to add even more ambience to the Glass Box. Patterned table clothes, cool centerpieces and interesting lighting such as bulb strands, tiki torches, candles or lanterns lend a festive touch. Be sure to include decorative accessories such as beach balls, leis, flags and other items that tie into your theme.

Once you have your décor figured out, it’s time to get down to the heart—and stomach—of the matter. Let’s face it; everyone wants to know one important thing: what’s on your menu! As your guests are arriving, make sure to have plenty of snacks on hand, including chips, salsa, guacamole, vegetables and dips.

For the main course, the options are as varied as you want it to be. Depending on your theme, time of day and occasion, you might simply grill up classics like hotdogs, burgers, chicken and corn on the cob. But for the backyard gourmand, a selection of organic farm-raised meats, fresh seafood and grilled vegetables procured from the local farmers market may be the way to go. If you need more grilling inspiration, check out Bobby Flay’s 10 Commandments of Grilling.

Don’t forget the sides. Potato and pasta salads, coleslaw, baked beans, French fries and fruit salad are all big crowd pleasers. And for dessert, you can’t miss with fruit pies and ice cream a la mode, strawberry shortcake or an assortment of cake pops or cupcakes.

Refreshments, anyone? With all that delicious food, you’ll need some complementary thirst-quenching beverages on hand. For the kiddos, concoct a special summer punch. For the adults, have a nice selection of craft brews, light summer wines or even a special barbecue cocktail menu. Whatever beverages you decide to serve, offer plenty of water to keep guests well hydrated.

Game on! Consider setting up a croquet course or a badminton court for a little athletic diversion. Perhaps a game of bocce ball is in order, or simply set out a few Frisbees or soft-toss footballs that guests of every fitness level can enjoy.

Perhaps the most important element of any truly successful barbecue is the guest list. The longer days of the summer are perfect for spending quality time with family, friends and neighbors. As the host or hostess with the mostest, it’s up to you to pull together a great group of folks who will enjoy the atmosphere, the weather, the food, the games and most importantly, each other. So what are you waiting for? You’ve got a barbecue to plan!
